Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mix of thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, urging residents to prepare for potential flooding and strong winds.
According to NiMet’s forecast, northern states such as Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina will experience morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Monday, followed by afternoon showers extending to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba.
“There’s a significant risk of flash flooding in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano during this period,” the agency cautioned.
In the central region, states like Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa are expected to see cloudy mornings with light to moderate rains, with Plateau facing a high flood risk. Southern states, including Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, will likely experience light to moderate showers throughout the day.
On Tuesday, northern areas will enjoy sunny skies with scattered clouds, though thunderstorms and rains will persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and nearby states. “Moderate rainfall will continue in central and southern regions,” NiMet noted.
By Wednesday, the north will see sunny mornings transitioning to thunderstorms, while central states experience cloudy skies with moderate rains.
In the south, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River are set for morning showers and heavier afternoon rains.
NiMet advised residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant, avoid driving during heavy downpours, secure loose items, and brace for strong winds and chilly nights.
“Unplug electrical appliances during storms and avoid taking shelter under tall trees,” the agency warned.
It also recommended that airline operators consult airport-specific weather updates for safe operations and directed residents to www.nimet.gov.ng for real-time updates.
