SADIQ ABUBAKAR, Maiduguri

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has pledged to intervene and support Yobe citizens in the area of Energy,  Education and Health to promote peaceful co-existence among the people of the state.

NNPC Gas and Power Chief Operating Officer,  Alhaji Yusuf Usman stated  this on Sunday in Potiskum town as part of his ‘thanksgiving visit to the Emir of Fika and Chairman Yobe State Council of Chiefs Dr Muhammad Ibn Abali Muhammadu Idrissa at his palace  for conferring the traditional title of’Matawallen Fika’ on him.

Usman said ,“we have to bring development especially in the areas of energy, education and health. All these things you see happening in the society is because of lack of purposeful and meaningful education.

“Not only going to school but also doing something with the education acquired, this is what made us what we are today. Assuming I didn’t go to school, probably I wouldn’t have been here, now that I’m privileged .

“I will also assist the society to be able to go to school and those who need to go to school so that they will also be responsible and assist in reducing the vices affecting the society”, Usman said.

According to him, “there are a lot of issues in the society and were driven by some factors; poverty and education. A clear sign of poverty which is undoubtedly confirmed that there is direct relationship between energy poverty and poverty itself.

“Our area which is deficient in energy, one sufficient in energy you will see development, once you see development you will see education because they are related”, Usman said.

Usman further appealed  to all well meaning individuals especially from  Potiskum Community to join hands together and support the Emirate for the benefit of the people and promote peaceful co-existence in the state.

He also expressed gratitude and commitment towards changing the lives of the citizens , saying, ” I feel privileged to have been identified by His Royal Majesty to the given the traditional title of ‘Matawallen Fika’.

“It’s a honour that I take seriously and I know on my own the reason why the title was given to me, to assist in developing the Emirate and it’s people, that’s number one responsibility”.

“Whatever opportunity I have I will bring development to the Emirate that is the only way I can give back the honor done to me. I don’t see this title as a political title but calling to begin to look at the society that has developed hope on me”.
