Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali
Nigeria’s Super Eagles clinched the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging past Egypt in a dramatic penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging as the match hero.
The third-place playoff ended goalless after regulation time, as both African giants struggled to break the deadlock despite creating scoring opportunities. Solid defensive displays and missed chances at both ends ensured the encounter was settled from the penalty spot.

Nwabali, who plays his club football with Chippa United, produced two decisive saves during the shootout, denying Egyptian stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. His composure and sharp reflexes swung the contest in Nigeria’s favour as the Super Eagles converted four of their spot-kicks to secure a 4-2 victory.
The win capped Nigeria’s AFCON campaign on a positive note, restoring pride after their earlier exit from the title race. Egypt, meanwhile, were left to rue missed penalties after dominating stretches of the encounter without finding a breakthrough.
Nwabali’s heroic performance underlined his growing reputation on the continental stage and proved decisive in ensuring the Super Eagles finished the tournament on the podium.
