Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reiterated the need for stronger healthcare systems and wider health insurance coverage as part of efforts to improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.
Obi made this known after holding discussions with healthcare professionals and experts in the United States on Friday, June 5, 2026, aimed at gaining insights into effective healthcare delivery models and successful health insurance systems.
According to him, the engagement focused on understanding how well-structured health insurance schemes contribute to better healthcare outcomes, particularly in primary and emergency care services.
Sharing details of the meeting, Obi said: “As part of our desire and commitment to building a healthier Nigeria, I met with some healthcare professionals and experts in the United States on Friday, June 5, 2026. The meeting was essentially to deepen my understanding of how successful health insurance systems deliver improved healthcare, especially in the areas of primary and emergency care.”
The former Anambra State governor stressed that improving healthcare remains a key priority in his vision for national development, noting that efforts must be intensified to ensure quality medical services are within the reach of all citizens.
He stated: “One of our key health objectives remains unchanged: to expand health insurance coverage, strengthen primary healthcare across our electoral wards, train more healthcare workers, and make quality healthcare accessible and affordable for all Nigerians.”
Obi further emphasized the link between a nation’s health and its development, declaring that sustainable progress can only be achieved through a robust healthcare system.
“A New Nigeria must be a healthier Nigeria.
“A New Nigeria is possible,” he added.
