Obsolete law, obstacle to teachers’ regulation – TRCN

JOHN ONAH, Abuja

Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has identified obsolete rules and regulations, as factor for inefficient Regulation of teachers in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of the Council Prof Josiah Ajiboye who disclosed at one-day capacity building workshop for Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN) recently called on Education stakeholders to rally round the Council in pushing for the amendment of the Act establishing  it.

He equally appealed to the National Assembly to as soon as possible pass into law a bill brought before it by TRCN to that effect.

“TRCN wishes to use its tentacle to call on government, education providers, funders and all stakeholders in education sector to intervene in order to save the teaching profession in the country”, he said.

Speaking on “Effective Collaboration towards Regulating the Teaching Profession in a Pandemic Era”, Mohammed Abubakar, ANIPR said the role of media in information dissemination in any given society is an important role which cannot be underestimated, especially, in a democratic society, where openness and transparency are supposed to be the key words in the governance process.

According to him, beyond information dissemination the media can, consciously work with the TRCN as it ensures that its regulatory roles are carried out effectively, thus, strengthening the partnerships for effective delivery across all tiers of government.

He emphasized the needs to attract the buying-in of the stakeholders, development partners and private sector interventions, advocate for the modification of attitudes and opinion of stakeholders especially those that hinder effective delivery.

“While the media has fared justifiably well in playing out its role in its coverage of activities of the ministry, despite the obvious challenges being encountered in the course of carrying out their duties, there is obviously the need for us to do more by refocusing our attention on the critical aspects of delivery of the TRCN as enshrined in the law”.

He opined that this strategic thinking will enable the media redirect the attention of the populace, the TRCN leadership as well as collaborating partners on what is required for meaningful change in the manner the agency carries out its mandate.
