By JOHN ONAH, Abuja –

The Senator representing Bayelsa East and the Chairman Senate Committee on host communities producing oil and gas, Sen. Degi Eremienyo has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, for rescuing the Ogoni clean project from implementation setback by terminating the appointment of Ferdinand Giadom as the coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project ( HYPREP).

Senator Degi, who gave the commendation in a statement in Abuja, described the choice of Prof Manibarini Zabbey as the new Coordinator as a square peg in square hole.

While acknowledging the sincere outstanding commitment of current Minister of Environment on the Ogoni clean up project, Sen. Degi expressed confident that the appointment of Prof. Zabbey, would actualize the federal government plan of restoring Ogoni land to its natural form.

According to him, “Prof. Zabbey who is a for-most and renowned Ogoni expert on hydrobiology and extensive experience background on remediation related activities with bias in bio monitoring and restoration ecology will no doubt actualize the federal government plan of restoring Ogoni land to its natural form”.

He equally commended oil multi-nationals especially Shell, foreign partners like United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Nigerian National Petroleum and Corporation Limited for their technical and financial contribution while urging them to do more in faithfully implementing the terms and conditions of the project to the letter.
