Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has defended his call for former Anambra Governor Peter Obi to notify him before visiting the state, emphasizing that it was a security protocol, not a threat.
Speaking at the inauguration of Edo Line, a state-owned transport company, in Benin on Tuesday, Okpebholo said he had no regrets about the directive, citing a tragic 2024 incident where his failure to heed similar advice led to the death of his police orderly.
“What I told Obi was simple advice, not a crime,” Okpebholo said, addressing journalists amid rainfall.
“As the chief security officer, I must be informed of such visits. In 2024, I ignored the Commissioner of Police’s advice at Benin Airport, and my orderly, Inspector Akor Onu, was shot dead before my eyes. That experience shapes my stance on security protocols.”
He added, “I’ve seen security reports and advised Obi. If he listens, fine. If not, it’s his choice.”
Okpebholo dismissed criticisms, questioning, “Why the fuss? Didn’t they claim they don’t have ‘shishi’?”
He urged focus on more pressing matters, emphasizing Edo’s progress under his leadership.
The governor attributed the Edo Line launch to increased federal allocations and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support.
“Without a father like President Tinubu, this dream wouldn’t have come true,” he said.
“His Renewed Hope Agenda is transforming Edo and Nigeria, funding our vision and turning it into reality.”
Okpebholo thanked Edo residents for their electoral support, declaring, “The people of Edo were in the wilderness for years. Now, change has arrived.”
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the event’s guest of honour, backed Okpebholo’s stance on security protocols.
“High-profile individuals like Peter Obi must inform governors before visiting to ensure proper security,” Wike said.
He noted that Obi followed such protocols when visiting him in Rivers State but questioned why he overlooked them in Edo.
“I commend Edo people for supporting Okpebholo’s election.
He’s focused and delivering practical governance,” Wike added, praising the governor’s initiatives, including Edo Line, which addresses transportation challenges for students, women, and men.
Wike expressed confidence in Okpebholo’s leadership, stating, “Your performance shows you mean well for Edo. It will give you the confidence to return home proudly after your tenure.”
The launch of Edo Line marks a significant step in Okpebholo’s administration, reflecting his commitment to leveraging federal support for state development.
