Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the death of a young boy, allegedly beaten after being accused of harvesting cocoa pods without permission.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Akure, Police spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade revealed that the incident took place around 2:30 p.m. on September 20 at Akunmi Quarters in Akungba-Akoko, within the Akoko South West Local Government Area.
According to Ayanlade, the boy was “severely assaulted” over claims he plucked cocoa pods from a farm.
“The boy was brought to the station in an unconscious state, and officers immediately directed that he be taken for urgent medical attention,” he said. Sadly, “at about 1736hrs, he was confirmed dead at the hospital.”
The police arrested the individual who filed the complaint, and the victim’s body was deposited at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Ayanlade noted that the investigation has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Akure to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry.
Condemning the tragic event, Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal emphasized the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands.
“Citizens are urged to resist the temptation of taking laws into their own hands, but rather report all infractions, disputes, or criminal acts to the Police and allow due process of the law to prevail,” the statement said.
The police also acknowledged the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), citing his “visionary policing agenda” and ongoing support, which have enhanced the Command’s capacity to maintain law and order in the state.
While offering condolences to the bereaved family, Ayanlade assured the public that the case would be handled with fairness, professionalism, and full respect for the rule of law.
He called on residents to continue collaborating with law enforcement to uphold peace and justice in the state.
