By TYAV SAM TYAV, Makurdi –
Following the formal inauguration of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard which some Benue people argued was only a change in the name, to distinguish it from the former Governor’s community volunteer guards, Chief Samuel Ortom has appealed for calm and support for the Governor Alia led administration to succeed.
A statement by the media aide to the former governor, Terver Akase said Ortom appreciated all those who have held passionate discussions regarding the issue, but appealed to them to sheathe their swords and give peace a chance.
The former, according to the statement said it was natural to have differing opinions on governance and the direction of the state, but he implored those with strong views on the matter to remember that government was not a static entity bur is a dynamic and evolving system.
He pointed out that “the State Executive Council, in collaboration with the House of Assembly, has the constitutional power to make laws and amend existing ones to address development issues at any given period. “
Ortom who appealed to the people of the state to support Governor Alia in his leadership journey and pray for the success of the present administration, assured that it would ultimately be for the benefit of everyone including himself.
He disclosed that during his two terms as Governor, he dedicated himself to serving the people of Benue State to the best of his ability, guided by a deep commitment to the collective welfare and the protection of the land.
“I have no regrets about my commitment and the sacrifices I made to defend Benue people against oppression and external interests that sought to undermine our rights and heritage as a people. My actions were always motivated by a desire to uplift our people, secure our God-given land and ensure a bright future for generations to come. The establishment of the Community Volunteer Guards, Livestock Guards and the enactment of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law were results of our pact with the people to always be on their side, as God Almighty was directing me”.
While stressing that it was important to acknowledge the circumstances and economic realities during his administration as it differed from those of Governor Alia’s time, Ortom also stressed that each leader faces unique challenges, and it is vital that the people respect this fact and engage in constructive dialogue at all times.
The former Governor informed that he hopes for a collaborative spirit, where the people could build on the progress made for the benefit of the state and enjoined the people to desist from acts capable of bringing retrogression to the people of the state.
