Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports suggesting that it has directed its members to contribute a compulsory N10,000 levy to fund party activities, describing such claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party expressed concern over a report by The Observer Times published under the headline: “PDP Calls on Members to Contribute N10,000 Each in Bid to Fund Party Activities.”
The PDP said the headline did not reflect the substance of the interview it referenced and amounted to either clickbait or a subjective misrepresentation.
While noting that the body of the report accurately quoted remarks made during the interview, the party faulted the headline, stressing that other reputable media organisations reported the same interview correctly without sensationalising it.
For clarity, the PDP reproduced a verbatim excerpt of the response given during the interview when asked how the party plans to fund its activities amid recent defections by some governors. The response stated:
> “The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice.
We are returning to that voluntary model. For example, if 60 million Nigerians give N10,000 each, that’s a huge sum. We are already seeing this kind of mass support in states like Plateau and Akwa Ibom.”
According to the PDP, the statement clearly underscores its long-standing belief in voluntary grassroots funding. The reference to N10,000, the party explained, was merely illustrative, intended to highlight the power of collective voluntary support, and not a directive, levy or mandatory contribution.
The party stressed unequivocally that there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment and no obligation imposed on any PDP member, urging the public to disregard the misleading headline and continue to support the party in ways they deem appropriate.
