National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled its national elective convention to select new national officers for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
This decision was announced in a communiqué issued following the NEC’s 101st meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, who presented the communiqué, stated that the national chairman and national secretary have been instructed to formally inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the upcoming convention.
“The NEC has approved the composition of the National Convention Committee and the National Convention Zoning Committee to ensure a transparent, credible, and successful elective convention,” Ologunagba said.
He further revealed that the NEC directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to initiate legal action to reclaim seats held by PDP-elected National and State Assembly members who defected to other political parties.
“Under Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), these defectors have forfeited their seats, as there has been no division or merger involving the PDP,” he explained.
Ologunagba expressed concern over reports of some PDP members participating in activities of another political party, urging them to demonstrate loyalty to the PDP, as dual party membership is prohibited by law.
“The NEC assures these members that their concerns are being addressed, with progress made toward resolving internal issues,” he added.
The NEC reaffirmed the PDP’s unity and strength as a leading opposition party, poised to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) and reclaim power in 2027. Ologunagba also announced that the NEC’s 102nd meeting is scheduled for August 25.
