Former Anambra governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to come clean on the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) amidst the lingering fuel scarcity crisis in the country.
Obi, in a statement on his social media handle on Tuesday, expressed outrage over the conflicting reports on subsidies and the NNPCL’s claim of financial constraints in supplying fuel, despite declaring a N3 trillion profit in 2023.
He described the situation as “utterly curious” and an “insult to the intelligence of the Nigerian people”, demanding transparency in the operations of the state-owned oil company.
“The fuel scarcity crisis is characterised by endless queues and untold hardship. It’s unacceptable that the NNPCL is shrouded in secrecy, and we demand transparency in their operations, financial dealings, and plans for the future,” Obi said.
The fuel scarcity crisis has worsened in recent weeks, with Nigerians facing hardships due to endless queues and skyrocketing prices.
Obi is urging the Federal Government to shed light on the NNPCL’s operations, citing the Petroleum Industry Act’s mandate for an open and transparent operation.
He called on Nigerians to demand accountability from the government, saying “we should not rest until we uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable. The Nigerian people deserve better.”
