Plateau State coalition for the All Progressives Congress (APC) has again urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to defect to the party, saying his leadership style and administrative record would strengthen the party and improve the state’s political direction.
The appeal was made at a press briefing in Jos led by the coalition’s chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Aliyu Abubakar.
Abubakar said the group’s position followed what it views as the governor’s “clear capacity” and results-driven approach to governance. He noted that the coalition’s internal assessment showed that the governor’s move to the APC would “reshape Plateau’s long-term development outlook,” adding that the executive arm plays a decisive role in state politics.
Speaking to journalists, Abubakar expanded on why the coalition believes the governor fits into the APC’s progressive structure.
In his words: “We have watched the governor’s leadership very closely, and it is clear to us that his administrative reforms, his stabilising approach to security issues, and the way he has managed the affairs of the state reflect a level of depth and seriousness that any party should be proud to associate with.
“This is why we are saying openly that bringing him into the APC would consolidate our internal structures and open wider doors for national partnerships and federal support that Plateau needs at this critical time.
“Even the governor himself has said repeatedly that governance is better when leaders complement one another. As he put it, ‘the position I am occupying and the position Professor Nentawe is occupying is not one versus the other; we can actually hold hands together and make Plateau greater.’ These are not ordinary words; they show a mindset that aligns with cooperation, partnership, and collective progress.”
He also responded to concerns from supporters in Jos North, saying the appeal partly stems from the need to address what many describe as longstanding political marginalisation in the area. According to him, a realignment involving the governor could restore political balance and reinforce the value of loyal constituencies within the party.
Abubakar called on political actors to avoid tension and approach ongoing discussions with maturity, stressing that politics “thrives on consultation and dialogue, not hostility.”
Reiterating the party’s openness to leaders with shared developmental ideals, Abubakar added: “The APC has always been a home for progressive, forward-looking individuals who are focused on delivering results rather than fighting personal battles. What matters to us is not where someone comes from but what they bring to the table for the people of Plateau.
“And when we look at Governor Mutfwang’s performance so far, we see a leader who is committed to peace, committed to administrative order, and committed to the welfare of our citizens.
” That is why we are appealing once again: let us work together, let us harmonise interests, and let us build a stable, cohesive political environment that serves Plateau first.”
Other APC figures, including Hon. Awal Isa Uba, Hon. Suleiman Saidu Buji and Hon. Rahama, backed the appeal and urged Governor Mutfwang to join the party as Plateau seeks a new phase of political stability and development.
