Plateau Assembly asks LG chairman to obey court judgments and vacate office

Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, Abok Ayuba,

Plateau State House Assembly on Tuesday asked the Chairman, Langtang North Local Government Council, Mr Zulfa Rimven, to obey court judgments and vacate his seat immediately or risk arrest.

The Assembly passed the motion after its attention was drawn to Rimven’s continuous occupation of the office even after the nullification of his election by both Plateau High Court and the Court of Appeal.

It urged the Police Commissioner in Plateau, Mr Batholomew Onyeka to unseal the council secretariat for the reinstated chairman, Mr Joshua Laven to resume office as the duly elected council chairman.

The Speaker, Mr Abok Ayuba told newsmen that while the Assembly lacked the Constitutional right to direct the police commissioner to enforce judgment, it could liaise with the National Assembly to issue the directive.

Ayuba also said the prolonged sealing of the assembly complex by the police for two months was uncalled for.

He blamed the immediate past administration in the state for the situation that slowed legislative activities in the state.

Ayuba pointed out that the two months closure of the assembly complex denied the lawmakers the opportunity to deliberate and take decisions that would have benefited Plateau people. (NAN)
