Police arrest 1,465 suspects for kidnapping, rape, other crimes in Bauchi

No fewer than 1,465 suspects were arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command in connection with 724 cases of kidnapping, rape, attempted murder, armed robbery and many other crimes in 2022.

This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Ahmed Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, in a press release made available to journalists in the state on Friday.

Wakil said that the successes recorded in the area of crime prevention and detection by the Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police in the state, Aminu Alhassan, are evidence of the decline in all categories of offenses reported during the period under review.

He added that the Command’s commitment to ensure the safety of lives and property, citizens and residents within the State, has intensified 24/7 round the clock patrols, guards duty and raids of identified black spots with a view to effectively checkmate crime and criminalities in the State.

The command’s spokesman who gave a breakdown of the cases and the suspects arrested in connection with the crimes committed within and outside the state, said that 81 cases of culpable homicide were recorded with 184 suspects arrested.

According to him, 106 cases of rape occured during the period but the Command successfully arrested 129 suspects arrested in connection with the cases; 60 cases of kidnapping occurred but 157 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases and 13 cases of unnatural offence were recorded, with 15 suspects arrested in connection with the cases.

He said: “The Command within the period under review, recorded seven hundred and twenty-four (724) cases and arrested over one thousand four hundred and sixty-five (1465) suspects in connection to various crimes committed within and outside the State.

“The Command has recorded eighty-one (81) cases of culpable homicide; 184 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases; 90 cases of armed robbery, 209 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases and 19 cases of attempted murder with 41 suspects arrested in connection with the cases.

“Others are 106 cases of rape, with 129 suspects arrested in connection with the cases; 60 cases of kidnapping, 157 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases and 13 cases of unnatural offence, with 15 suspects arrested in connection with the cases.

“Also recorded were 27 cases of grievous hurt with 63 suspects arrested in connection with the cases, five cases of assault, eight suspects arrested in connection with the cases, 35 cases of theft, 133 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases, 152 cases of false pretense/cheating, 205 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases and even cases of forgery, nine suspects were arrested in connection with the cases.

“Eight cases of receiving stolen properties were recorded with 17 suspects arrested in connection with the cases; 11 cases of unlawful possession, 105 suspects arrested; four cases of forgery of currency notes, four suspects were arrested in connection with the cases; two cases of arson/mischief, seven suspects were arrested in connection with the cases and four cases of breach of public peace, seven suspects were arrested in connection with the cases.”

According to him, 11 cases of offence against firearms were recorded but 15 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases; two cases of narcotics, five suspects were arrested in connection with the cases; 56 cases of other offenses against persons, 121 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases and 26 cases of other offenses against properties, 50 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases.

He further said that “the Command during its operations within the period, rescued 53 kidnapped victims from the kidnappers pointing out that three different hideouts of the kidnappers were destroyed and 12 of them neutralized during a gun duel.”

The Command’s Spokesman said that exhibits recovered from the kidnappers include: five AK-47 rifles, one SMG sterlet with 30 live ammunitions, one 145 live ammunition, three fabricated SMG, 20 local revolver made guns, 10 dane guns, 24 fabricated dane-guns, 20 cartridges, 45 machetes and one SMG with 90 live ammunition.

Other Exhibits recovered, according to him, include: one AK-47 rifle, two assault rifles, eight live ammunition, one pistol revolver with five rounds of ammunition, eight different phones, one locally-made pistol revolver and 13 dane guns.

Others are nine fabricated revolvers, one single barrel, one double barrel, 23 live cartridges, 14 motorcycles, five laptops, 52 different handsets and 31 ATM cards of different banks. Also recovered are eight different models of vehicles

For the monetary recoveries, the Command’s Spokesman said that the sum of N16,659,000:00k, 29 pieces of CEFA France currency suspected to be counterfeit, 234 pieces of 1000 Naira notes denomination, suspected to be counterfeit and 3,590 pieces of $100 Dollar notes suspected to be counterfeit currency.

“It is pertinent to emphasize here that these aforementioned successes were made possible through information given to the Police from members of the public, who, partners in progress with the Nigeria Police, share our desires and aspirations to enable a safe and secure environment for all residents in the State.

“The Command has put in place crime preventive measures which include visibility policing, community partnership, constant raids of black spots, regular foot and vehicular patrols, surveillance on buildings and vulnerable areas, stop and search, and intelligence-led policing through partnership with sisters’ security agencies and other non-governmental organizations in order to nip in the bud, all forms of crime/criminals and their hideouts in the state,” he stated.

Wakil assured that the command is fully prepared and ready for the year 2023 as more strategies will be put in place to ensure the security of lives and properties.

He concluded that: “As we navigate towards the shores of the 2023 general elections and beyond, Bauchi State Police Command once again appeals to the political stakeholders and their party loyalist to be guided by the dictates of the Electoral Act 2022 and other relevant Laws of the land, while shunning actions inimical to the peaceful ambiance enjoying by the residents in Bauchi State.”
