In a high-stakes raid deep in the forests of Edo State, police operatives from the Amedokhian Tactical Division took down two suspected kidnappers in a fierce gun battle, recovering deadly weapons and ammunition in the process.
The operation, carried out on September 30 in Esan South-East Local Government Area, was based on what authorities described as “credible intelligence.”
According to a statement issued by CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, the mission targeted a gang believed to be responsible for a string of abductions in the region.
Led by SP Peter Ogah, the tactical unit worked alongside local hunters and vigilante groups, combing the bushy stretch along the railway track leading to Ubiaja.
> “The team came under immediate fire from the suspects during the raid,” Yamu said. “In the ensuing gun duel, two of the kidnappers were neutralised, while others fled the scene with gunshot wounds.”
At the scene, officers recovered an AK-47 rifle (breech number 4148), 33 rounds of live ammunition, and two mobile phones.
The wounded suspects were taken to the hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.
In a separate operation the same day around Idumogun community in Ukoni, operatives uncovered an English-made double-barrel shotgun (breech number 03273286) along with two live cartridges, further tightening the noose on criminal elements in the area.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Monday Agbonika, praised the swift collaboration between the tactical unit, hunters, and vigilante groups.
> “This is a strong example of what community policing can achieve when everyone works together,” Agbonika said. “The command remains resolute in cleansing Edo of criminal elements.”
He also called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, urging citizens to support grassroots safety initiatives and informal policing efforts.
