Sokoto State Police Command has arrested a suspected member of the notorious Lakurawa bandit syndicate and recovered an AK-49 rifle along with ammunition in a targeted operation.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Ahmed Musa announced the breakthrough in a statement released on Thursday through the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai.
Musa revealed that on Sunday, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, acting on precise intelligence, arrested Buba Magaji from Julirkol Village in Silame Local Government Area.
“Magaji was identified as a key associate of the Lakurawa syndicate, known for terrorizing communities in Silame, Wamakko, Binji, and Yabo LGAs,” the commissioner stated.
During interrogation, Magaji confessed to his involvement in the group’s criminal activities and disclosed the location of a hidden AK-49 rifle.
Following his confession, police conducted a thorough search on Wednesday in the Silame axis, recovering the rifle, a magazine, and 22 rounds of live ammunition.
“This arrest and recovery mark a significant step in disrupting the operations of a syndicate that has caused widespread fear,” Musa said, praising the operation as a testament to effective intelligence and the dedication of the anti-kidnapping unit.
The commissioner also acknowledged the crucial role of community vigilance, noting, “The tip-off from residents was pivotal to this success, and we urge the public to continue supporting our efforts.”
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating kidnapping, banditry, and other crimes across Sokoto State.
