Hunger protest
Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has raised fresh concerns that more than 33 million Nigerians could be plunged into severe hunger and malnutrition by 2026 unless urgent action is taken.
Secretary General of the NRCS, Dr. Abubakar Kende, issued the warning in Abuja on Friday during the launch of the organisation’s new Nutrition Advocacy Plan.
The event also featured the recognition of Ambassador Layla Ali Othman, who was named the society’s Nutrition Ambassador.
Kende described the growing hunger crisis as alarming but expressed optimism that committed partners can help ease the burden. He noted that philanthropists like Othman bring hope to the society’s ongoing fight against malnutrition.
He added that the Red Cross is eager to see Othman become “the face of its Anti-Hunger and Malnutrition effort,” stressing that the newly unveiled plan provides a clear direction for meaningful interventions across the country.
According to him, “The society hopes to make a significant impact in the fight against hunger and malnutrition with the help of its nutrition ambassador and other stakeholders.”
In her response, Othman thanked the Red Cross for the honour and pledged her support to the cause. (NAN)
