Minister of Defense, Christopher Musa
The Senate has confirmed the former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, as the Minister of Defence.
The Senate confirmed Musa on Wednesday via a voice vote after a rigorous screening session in which lawmakers asked him many questions.
Musa, who retired barely 40 days ago, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu as the Defence Minister on Tuesday. His nomination was transmitted to the Senate the same day for confirmation.
Senate Erupts in Drama as Lawmakers Block ‘Bow and Go’ Request for Ex-CDS Musa
The Senate turned chaotic on Wednesday as a simple request triggered an unexpected showdown among lawmakers. Tensions flared when Senator Sani Musa of Niger East suggested that Christopher Musa — the former Chief of Defence Staff and a ministerial nominee — should be allowed to “take a bow and go,” a courtesy often extended to high-profile appointees.
But the proposal backfired instantly.
Before the words had fully settled, several senators shot to their feet, voicing sharp objections. Their loud protests quickly drowned out the proceedings, transforming the chamber into a swirl of competing shouts and hand gestures. What was expected to be a smooth confirmation process suddenly morphed into a heated confrontation, laying bare deep disagreements over whether the ex-CDS deserved an exemption from scrutiny.
The uproar forced the leadership to intervene as the usually composed Senate floor descended into one of its most spirited moments in recent weeks.
