Opposition leaders in the South-South region have called for unified efforts to strengthen opposition politics and mobilize grassroots support as a pathway to reform Nigeria’s political system.
Meeting under the banner of “The Alternative” movement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, January 16, 2025, they stressed that a united opposition, rooted in citizen engagement, is vital to restoring democratic accountability and public trust.
Otunba Segun Showunmi, former Ogun State governorship aspirant and leader of the National Opposition Movement Coalition, urged opposition parties to prioritize collaboration and provide credible governance alternatives.
He said, “We need to come together and have a collective thought process. Opposition politics should not be about chaos or divisiveness. Instead, it should offer constructive alternatives to governance and inspire hope in the Nigerian people.”
He criticized opposition parties for often replicating the failures of ruling parties and stressed the need for ideological clarity. Highlighting the importance of grassroots participation, he added, “If we want better leadership, we must be the change we seek. Join political parties, engage in the process, and demand accountability from your leaders.” Addressing gender inclusion, Showunmi said, “How can we have women leading banks and corporations but not playing significant roles in our political leadership?”
Labour Party chairman in Rivers State, Hilda Dokubo, echoed these calls, emphasizing the need to tackle local challenges and ensure equitable development for the South-South region. She said, “Rivers State is in our hands, and it is what we choose to make it. Let no one distract us from the issues that matter most at the grassroots level.”
Dokubo also lamented the underrepresentation of women in politics despite their achievements in other sectors. “How can we have women leading banks and corporations but not playing significant roles in our political leadership?” she asked. She called for reforms to create a level playing field for women in the political space.
Hon. Bright Ngola, National Coordinator of the Niger Delta Right Advocate, emphasized the critical role of opposition in democracy. “A vibrant opposition is essential for democracy. It challenges the status quo and ensures that governance is responsive to the needs of the people.” He noted.
Chief Solsuema Osaro, Rivers State chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stressed the importance of unity among opposition parties, urging them to prioritize the common good over personal ambitions. He said, “If we truly want change, we must stand united. Our differences can be resolved through dialogue, but our focus must remain on the common good of the Nigerian people.”
The town hall meeting, which brought together elder statesmen, youth representatives, women activists, and advocacy groups, is part of “The Alternative” movement’s broader initiative to redefine opposition politics nationwide. Similar events have been held in Abuja, Plateau, Bauchi, and Kano, with plans to extend to other regions.
As the 2027 general elections approach, Showunmi called for early efforts to identify capable leaders across all levels of government. “The earlier we start searching for the right leaders, the better. We need quality people not just at the presidential level but in the legislature and other arms of government.”
