Newly elected Lau LG Chairman, Hon. Peter Julius
Newly elected chairman of Lau Local Government Area in Taraba State, Peter Julius, has vowed to transform rice production and livestock farming in the region by linking local farmers with major rice producers across Africa.
Julius spoke on Saturday shortly after he was declared winner of the Saturday’s November 8, 2025, local government elections.
NATIONAL ACCORD reports that the elections, conducted by the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC), covered all sixteen local government areas of the state. Candidates from APP, ADC, PDP, and YDP contested the polls. Notably, the commission rejected the submission of the major opposition party, APC, citing late filing of candidate lists.
Julius, a former Taraba State Commissioner for Rural and Urban Development and ex-chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Taraba State, won under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) banner with 68,430 votes. His closest competitor from the ADC managed just 385 votes.
Addressing journalists after being declared the winner, Julius highlighted the potential of Lau’s fertile land and abundant vegetation to produce livestock and meat not only for Taraba State but for the entire nation
He said, “Winning local government election is one thing, making impacts to develop the locals is another. Our area has a lot of land for rice cultivation and livestock farming; it is an opportunity for me to write my name in the good book of my people.”
He added, “I will endeavor to use my experience and connections to boost agriculture, which we in Lau are mainly known for within the state. I urge the people of my area to remain peaceful with one another for more development to strive both from the local, state, and federal government.”
Our correspondent reports that the PDP swept all sixteen local government councils during Saturday’s polls, winning both chairmanships and councilor seats across the state.
