By DAVID IORJA, Abuja –
President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu have showered praise on Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their remarkable 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, securing a record-extending 10th title.
The thrilling match, held at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on Saturday, saw the Super Falcons overcome a two-goal deficit to cement their status as Africa’s football queens.
In a statement issued shortly after the match by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the victory as a powerful symbol of resilience and national pride.

“The Super Falcons’ extraordinary performance in Rabat, overcoming a spirited Moroccan side backed by a passionate home crowd, embodies the unyielding Nigerian spirit,” he said.
“Through hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have fulfilled the nation’s dreams and prayers. Nigeria eagerly awaits to welcome our champions. Congratulations!”
Earlier, via his official X handle, Tinubu had rallied the team before the final, saying, “My beloved Super Falcons, you stand on the cusp of history tonight at the 2024 WAFCON final.
“Your awe-inspiring performances over the past three weeks have showcased pride, honor, and true sportsmanship. Go all out for victory!”
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, speaking in Abuja on Sunday, echoed her husband’s sentiments, congratulating the team for their historic achievement.
“On behalf of Nigerian women and the entire nation, I thank you for making us proud,” she said.
“Your 3-2 victory is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. You have written your names in gold, inspired millions across the continent, and solidified your place as Queens of African football. We thank God for this remarkable triumph.”
The match saw Morocco dominate early, with captain Ghizlane Chebbak scoring a stunning long-range goal in the 12th minute, followed by Sanaâ Mssoudy’s composed finish in the 24th minute, leaving Nigeria trailing 2-0 at halftime.
The Super Falcons roared back after the break when a VAR-awarded penalty for a handball by Morocco’s Nouhaila Benzina was converted by Esther Okoronkwo in the 62nd minute. Okoronkwo then assisted Folashade Ijamilusi’s equalizer in the 71st minute, shifting momentum.
The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Okoronkwo’s well-executed set-piece delivery set up Joe Echegini for the winning goal.
Despite intense pressure from Morocco in stoppage time, Nigeria held firm to claim their 10th WAFCON title in 13 editions, having previously defeated defending champions South Africa 2-1 in the semi-finals. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were honored as Goalkeeper and Player of the Tournament, respectively, for their outstanding contributions.
