President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards ending the ongoing killings in Benue and its environs by directing the constitution of a peace resolution committee.
The committee, which will comprise representatives from government, traditional leaders, youths, and women, will work towards finding lasting solutions to the crisis.
According to Tinubu, “We are to govern, not to bury. We are here to multiply, not to lose numbers.”
He emphasized the need for unity, sincere leadership, and actionable peace strategies, saying, “Let us stop seeing one another as enemies.
“We must stop opening doors to terror and violence. We must embrace peace with serious understanding.”
The President listed notable members of the committee to include the Tor Tiv, Prof James Ayatse, Och’Idoma Elaigwu Odogbo, and Gen Atom Kpera (rtd), among others.
Tinubu pledged to invest in the peace project, saying, “I am committed to investing in peace here in Benue and across Nigeria.
“Let us create a peace and development committee now, with representation from all stakeholders… I’m ready to invest in this peace project.”
The committee’s establishment comes after the June 13 attack on Yelwata, which resulted in over 200 deaths, scores of injuries, and destruction of properties.
Tinubu sympathized with the people of Benue, especially the victims of the attack, and emphasized the need for collective action to address the crisis.
With this development, the President has shown his commitment to finding lasting solutions to the conflict and promoting peace and development in Benue and across Nigeria.
