Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani has called on pharmacists to protect the integrity of their profession by waging a sustained war against quackery in order to safeguard public health and strengthen healthcare delivery in the country.
The governor made the call at the public presentation of a book titled: “ _Professor Ahmed Tijjani Mora: A Pillar of Pharmacy Regulation in Nigeria_ ” organised in honour of renowned pharmacist, Professor Ahmed Tijjani Mora, to mark his 70th birthday at Hotel 17, Kaduna.
Represented by his Principal Private Secretary, Professor Bello Ayuba, the governor stressed the need for pharmacists to jealously guard their profession against impostors whose activities threaten public safety and undermine confidence in the healthcare system.
He also noted that other professionals within the health sector must be effectively monitored to ensure efficiency and accountability in the overall healthcare delivery structure.
Governor Sani described Prof. Mora as a towering figure in the pharmacy profession whose contributions to education, mentorship and regulation would remain indelible in the nation’s health sector.
He said the publication of the book had preserved the intellectual legacy and achievements of the elder statesman for future generations.
“It is gratifying that the book has saved us the embarrassment of missed opportunities in transmitting the thoughts and contributions of this academic giant to generations unborn,” he said.
According to him, Prof. Mora’s over five decades of teaching, leadership and mentorship have inspired generations of pharmacists and healthcare professionals across the country.
The governor used the occasion to highlight achievements of his administration in the health sector, disclosing that 255 Primary Healthcare Centres had been upgraded to Level 2 status across all wards in Kaduna State.
He added that the 300-bed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Specialist Hospital, abandoned by previous administrations, had been completed and fully operationalised by his government.
Governor Sani further disclosed that his administration had strengthened secondary healthcare services through the upgrade of 15 General Hospitals across the state, while also improving the welfare of health workers through the implementation of CONHESS and CONMESS salary structures.
Speaking on education, the governor said his administration had constructed 62 new science secondary schools and embarked on the rehabilitation of several dilapidated schools to improve learning outcomes.
He noted that the reforms had led to significant improvement in students’ performances in national examinations, while ongoing agricultural interventions had seen smallholder farmers receive free fertilisers for two consecutive years.
The governor maintained that the restoration of peace and harmony across Kaduna State remained the hallmark of his administration, noting that no religious or communal clash had been recorded in the last three years.
According to him, the peaceful atmosphere had encouraged free movement of people, boosted trade and commerce, and attracted local and foreign investments, paving the way for legacy projects such as mass transit schemes, transport terminals and skills acquisition centres across the state.
