In recognition of United Nations Day 2024, the Plateau State’s SDGs Project Coordinator, Mrs. Nanbam Esther Danjuma-Lot, has called for heightened commitment to sustainable development in the state.
In a statement issued to mark the global event, Mrs. Danjuma-Lot emphasized that the day serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to foster an inclusive and sustainable world, in alignment with the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She underscored the progress Plateau State has made under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, particularly in poverty alleviation, access to clean water, energy solutions, and quality education.
She stated “Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, we are making significant strides in our commitment to climate resilience, economic empowerment, and social development.
“The administration recognizes that sustainable development is critical to addressing poverty, hunger, and ensuring access to quality education and clean water. Our ongoing partnerships with international bodies, including the United Nations, are essential for implementing projects that promote these goals and improve the well-being of our communities.”
Moreover, in addressing the escalating climate crisis, Mrs. Danjuma-Lot outlined the proactive strategies being adopted in Plateau State
“Climate change remains one of the greatest threats to humanity, and we are intensifying efforts to combat environmental degradation. Our administration is committed to implementing afforestation programs, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and developing climate-smart infrastructure.
“These initiatives are not only critical for enhancing our resilience to climate impacts but also for promoting biodiversity and improving the livelihoods of our communities. By aligning our efforts with SDG 13 (Climate Action), we aim to safeguard our environment for future generations and ensure a sustainable future for Plateau State.” She emphasized.
She also reaffirmed the State’s dedication to gender equality and social justice, thereby aligning with SDGs 5 and 16, and called upon citizens to engage actively in sustainable development, sharing her vision for Plateau State to become a model for Nigeria and beyond.
Our development agenda ensures that everyone, regardless of gender, has equal access to opportunities. We are committed to promoting human rights and fostering inclusive institutions that empower all citizens,” she explained.
“True development requires us all to take responsibility—whether through conservation, advocating for social justice, or promoting peace
“We aspire to build a Plateau State that not only achieves the Sustainable Development Goals but also serves as a model of sustainable development for Nigeria and beyond. Together, we can create a future where everyone can thrive.” Mrs. Danjuma-Lot added
