By CHRISTIANA LOT, Jos –
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Professor Tanko Ishaya, has called on members of the university community and the nation to embrace peace, humility, and generosity during this Christmas season and beyond.
He made this call at the 2024 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, an annual tradition at the university that includes a tree lighting ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Professor Ishaya described the event as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewal.
“This celebration is not just a Christian tradition; it transcends religious boundaries, offering us all a chance to reflect, give thanks, and renew our commitment to virtues like generosity and humility,” he said.
He also prayed for continued blessings for the university and a peaceful new year for the country.
The ceremony, held on campus, featured readings from scripture, traditional Christmas carols, and an exhortation by Professor Danny McCain, Director of Conflict and Peace Studies.
In his address, McCain urged attendees to reflect on three key themes of the season: peace, humility, and giving.
Drawing from biblical references, McCain spoke of the angels’ proclamation of peace at the birth of Christ, emphasizing its relevance in a divided world.
“The message of Christmas is a message of peace—peace with God, peace in our hearts, and peace with one another,” he said.
He urged attendees to reconcile with others during the season, saying, “If you have unresolved conflicts, Christmas is the time to seek peace and reconciliation.”
McCain also reflected on the humility of Christ’s birth, reminding the audience of the importance of modesty and service. “The King of kings was born in a manger. If Jesus, who had all power, chose humility, then we too must embrace humility in our lives,” he said.
On the subject of giving, McCain highlighted the wise men’s gifts to the newborn Christ as an example of sacrificial generosity. “Christmas is about giving, not just to those close to us but to those in need. Let us reach out to the lowly and forgotten in our communities,” he added.
The highlight of the evening was the lighting of the Christmas tree, which symbolized hope and unity for the university and its wider community. The Vice-Chancellor, while performing the ceremony, prayed for a prosperous and peaceful new year for the university and the country.
