The United States Government Exchange Alumni Association of Nigeria (USGEAAN) Sokoto State chapter recently organized a 3-day workshop on good governance and accountability in Sokoto State.
The workshop, themed “Enhancing Good Governance and Accountability in Sokoto State,” brought together 50 participants, mainly youths, to appreciate the essence of democracy and its benefits.
In his opening remarks, the chairman of the association, Dr. Jabi Kilgori, expressed his gratitude to the US Government for sponsoring the workshop, saying, “It couldn’t have come at a better time than now when good governance and accountability are so dearly needed in Nigeria.”
He urged the resource persons to be practical with the participants, emphasizing that “we are all stakeholders in this democracy and governance.”
Dr. Kilgori also stressed the importance of promoting peace on social media, saying, “The primary essence of governance, which is security of life and property, must not be compromised.”
He encouraged the youths to be advocates and ambassadors of good governance, adding that “whatever you can do to make the country better for all of us is highly welcome.”
Professor Abubakar Abdullahi, a Professor of Political Sciences from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), presented a paper on “Tripod of Good Governance In A Democracy And Accountability In Public Resources Management.”
He noted that good governance is characterized by leaders being responsive to the demands of the governed, saying, “The extent to which government responds to the needs of the electorates is what determines whether good governance is in place or not.”
Other topics presented at the workshop included “Tools for Civic Engagement and Advocacy,” “Citizen Rights and Responsibilities in Governance,” “Strategies For Holding Public Officials Accountable,” and “Highlighting The Link Between Accountability and Community Development.”
The workshop aimed to empower the participants with knowledge and skills to promote good governance and accountability in Sokoto State.
