Aston Villa got off to a challenging start to the season, with no wins from the first three games and no goals scored. Luckily, the club fared much better in the transfer window, especially on deadline day.
The biggest piece of news was the acquisition of Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United. The player’s progress slowed since his switch to Old Trafford in 2021, but he will be hoping to get it back on track under the tutelage of Unai Emery at Villa.
A Shrewd Deadline Day Signing for Villa
Villa added eight new players in the transfer window while also retaining several key figures, which positions them well to remain competitive in the top half of the Premier League table during the 2025–26 season. Although the start to the campaign has been less than ideal, football odds continue to suggest that Unai Emery’s side has the quality to compete in the upper half. By contrast, Burnley, Sunderland, and Wolves are currently viewed as relegation candidates, with odds of 2/7, 4/5, and 5/6 respectively — placing Villa comfortably outside this conversation in bookmakers’ projections.
The arrival of Jadon Sancho is seen as an important addition, offering further strength to Emery’s squad. While Jacob Ramsey’s move to Newcastle was a loss, Sancho has the potential to provide an impactful replacement if he settles well and delivers consistent performances. With this in mind, Villa remain well placed to challenge higher up the table against some of the league’s top sides.
Sancho Once Thought of as One of the Best in the World
Before Sancho signed for Manchester United in 2021, he was considered one of the hottest talents in the world of football. During his time at Borussia Dortmund between 2017 and 2021, he notched 38 goals in 104 league appearances. He earned plaudits for his speed and technical prowess, and became one of the best wingers on the planet in one-on-one situations.
Thanks to his incredible performances in black and yellow, Sancho commanded an eye-watering sum of £73 million to move to the red side of Manchester in 2021. He was never able to recapture the same form there, though, and his decline saw him lose his place in the England setup. Emery has already shown that he has the power to revitalize out-of-form players, and he could have the same effect on Sancho at Villa. The 25-year-old will be hungry to prove himself and show United what they are missing.
Sancho Will Be Desperate to Earn World Cup Call Up
Another key factor that could spur Sancho on to greatness this year is the fact that the World Cup takes place next summer. An in-form Sancho could catch the eye of Thomas Tuchel, as the German manager loves to play with tricky wingers in his attacking setup and wanted to sign him when he was Chelsea manager.
Sancho’s last major showing in an England shirt was in Euro 2020, when he famously missed a penalty in the final against Italy. He wasn’t included in the squad for the 2022 World Cup or Euro 2024, so he will be desperate to reclaim his place.
Sancho could be one of the biggest signings to watch this season, as he seeks to get his career back on track at Villa. This could end up being an excellent addition for Emery.
