Former Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige
A quiet evening commute on the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North, Anambra State, turned deadly when gunmen ambushed the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, leaving one woman dead and several others injured.
The disturbing incident, which happened on Wednesday, was confirmed by Fred Chukwulobe, former spokesman to the ex-Minister of Labour.
Although Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy at the time, his pilot vehicle bore the brunt of the attack.
According to Chukwulobe, the attackers—who were “suspected assailants” dressed in police and military uniforms—opened fire without warning.
In the chaos that followed, a young woman who had begun recording the unfolding violence on her phone was shot dead. “Unfortunately, a lady who was recording the shooting was fatally shot by the gunmen,” Chukwulobe said.
A nearby shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also shot.
He survived but suffered severe blood loss and is scheduled for surgery to extract the bullets. Chukwulobe noted that doctors expect him to “make full recovery,” adding that he was lucky the bullets missed his spine.
The pilot car in Ngige’s convoy was riddled with bullets, and a police officer in the lead vehicle was shot. The attackers reportedly stripped him of his gun and uniform before fleeing.
“No policeman was killed,” Chukwulobe clarified, adding that the injured escort leader had already undergone surgery and is expected to recover.
Chukwulobe said he personally spoke with Dr. Ngige after the attack. “I just got off the phone with His Excellency and he confirmed the development, promising to do all he can to ensure that those injured receive adequate treatment,” he stated.
Ngige also offered his condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life while recording the incident.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the attack.
