
A Group of scientists and environmentalist have mobilised thousands of youths, through Social media and trained them to halt garbage, so as to save the environment from pollution.
Mr Nurudeen Bello, the Director, African Climate Reporters (ACR), stated this at a one-day sensitisation workshop, ahead of the World International Clean-up Day 2021, on Wednesday, in Kaduna.
Mr. Bello, a climatologist, microbiologist and leader of ACR, stressed the need for more awareness on the harmful effects of throwing plastics, trash in streams, rivers, and gutters.
He said that the aims of the campaign were to raise more public awareness on the dangers of the practice to human life, animals and other living organisms.
Bello added that a fresh and healthy environment was very vital for the growth and success of wildlife, fruits, vegetables, and other species within the environment.
“The environment around us is essential to human survival, hence the need to protect it through cleaning and raising more awareness among youth and teenagers on their own contributions.”
According to him, the campaign, flagged-off on Wednesday, at the Womanhood Foundation School, was expected to last for one week.
Bello also drew the attention of all, students and other residents, to the importance of complying with COVID-19 protocols, like wearing face masks and respecting social distancing to avert the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
He stressed that social media would be used to mobilise thousands of youths and women and sensitize them, through their android phones, on the importance of cleanliness of their environment.
Also speaking, Malam Abdulhadi Mohammed, Head of Geography Department at the school of Health Science Kaduna, stressed the need to train more students on how to protect their environment through routine cleaning of their surroundings daily.
Mohammed said they also needed to know that there were other stakeholders in charge of protecting their environment that need their support in the campaign for a clean environment, which was essential for a heathy living.
Most of the students that attended the workshop expressed delight and showed their full commitment to saving the environment.
