Zulum visits former Boko Haram Stronghold Rann, disburses new naira notes to 12,000 IDPs

Governor Babagana Zulum

By SADIQ ABUBAKAR, Maiduguri –

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum on Thursday visited Rann, headquarters of Kala-Balge Local Government in the Borno Central Senatorial District by helicopter, where he supervised the disbursement of redesigned new naira notes to over 12,000 returnee IDPs.

According to the Governor, the intervention was to enable the returnee IDPs resident in the area to buy food items to feed themselves and families .

It will be recalled that since the insurgency period, the people of the area have been cut off by flood, which usually destroy farmlands, especially, during the raining season and forced residents to relocate and live with only scarce food stuff from boarder villages between Nigeria and Cameroon Republic, hence, Rann town can not be reached by road from Dikwa town but only through the border towns or areas around the Cameroon Republic.

Following this circumstances, the only flooded road to Rann has also been taken over by a dam discharge in Central Africa, which trapped Nigerians in Rann, preventing them from travelling to other parts of Borno state and denying them access to their farmlands which were also flooded.

The situation had made Governor Zulum since his assumption of office to be flying from Maiduguri to Rann town via helicopter to coordinate the distribution of food items and cash to the isolated people living in the area.

”We are here in Rann to provide some relief materials to about 12,000 households living here” Zulum explained.

However, before the governors visit on Thursday, people of Rann have already complained that traders and other petty business operators were no longer accepting the old naira notes from them due to the CBN announcement in replacement of the old naira notes and the redesigned new naira notes latest by 31st January 2023.

Meanwhile, Governor Zulum while in Rann, inspected ongoing public projects which included the Rann General Hospital now fully completed.

He also visited a new LGC secretariat site at over 70% completion stage and a central Mosque at 70% completion stage while the Kala Balge LGC Transitional Caretaker Chairman, Zannah Jabu conducted the Governor around the projects.

Governor Zulum traveled to Rann in company of the APC’s candidate for Borno central senatorial seat, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan, house of reps candidate for Marte, Monguno and Nganzai, Engr. Bukar Talba, majority leader of the Borno State House of Assembly, Dige Mohammed, commissioner for local government, Sugun Mai Mele and some top government officials.
