Lagos State Police Command has swiftly restored order at Tejuosho Market Phase II in Surulere following a violent rampage by hoodlums who masked their assault as a demonstration against electricity blackouts.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, detailed the chaos in a Friday statement from Lagos, noting the disturbance erupted around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday after a distress alert reported thugs targeting vendors, wrecking assets, and clashing with on-site security.
“The attackers vandalised parts of a commercial bank and assaulted policemen on guard,” Oluseyi recounted. Yet, Mobile Police Force units held the line, thwarting a full breach of the bank and the Market Police Post.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh wasted no time, dispatching a mix of regular officers and elite tactical teams to the hotspot. Their coordinated push scattered the mob and led to the arrest of 18 key perpetrators.
“The suspects are currently in custody and under investigation, with police vowing to track down others who participated in the unrest,” the spokesperson affirmed. With calm prevailing, traders and shoppers are back to business as usual.
“Normalcy has been fully restored and the situation is under control; people are enjoined to go about their lawful businesses peacefully without fear of apprehension,” Oluseyi added.
In a firm message, CP Jimoh cracked down on such aggression: “Jimoh reiterates that violent attacks on police personnel and destruction of property will not be tolerated. The commissioner advises residents to respect law enforcement officers as they carry out their duties of safeguarding lives and property.”
Oluseyi encouraged the public to channel grievances through official channels, including the nearest station or emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870.
