2023: C’River PDP unveils 2nd female deputy governorship candidate after 30 years

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State on Monday unveiled its 2nd female deputy governorship candidate, Mrs. Emana Ambrose Awana ahead of the 2023 election in the state.

Mrs. Awana’s nomination as the deputy governorship candidate comes nearly 30 years after Mrs. Cecilia Ekpeyong was appointed as the first female deputy governorship candidate in the state in 1992.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony at the PDP Secretariat in Calabar on Monday, The Cross River PDP Governorship Candidate, Professor Sandy Onor, described his running mate as an amazon.

He said: “We came to the point of taking a decision after wider consultations, there was no segment that we did not reach because there was need to brighten the ticket”

“We wanted to changing the narrative because we have not been carrying women along, we needed to filled the position with a woman”

He said there were good people especially the men, but a decision has to be taken”

Professor Onor said “we wanted a woman who will appeal to the Youths, who has character and vision to key to our program”.

Addressing PDP supporters at the party’s secretariat, the State Chairman of PDP, Bar Venatius Ikem, said this is one of his landmark achievements after successfully midwifing the party primaries that produced its candidate.

“Today God has given us a woman as deputy governor who will occupy the office of deputy governor”.

“The first time Cross River State produced a deputy governor was in 1992”, he said.
