Borno State Deputy Speaker, Engr. Abdullahi Askira
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the clamour for a leadership change in Borno South Senatorial District has taken a new dimension as All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders throw their weight behind the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Engr. Abdullahi Askira.
At a series of consultative meetings held across the senatorial district, speakers emphasized that the 20-year dominance of the Gwoza axis necessitates a shift to other local governments to ensure a sense of belonging.
A prominent female politician, Tafu Malla, described Engr. Askira as a grassroots mobilizer, who has used his office to facilitate employment for many youths in the military and paramilitary services.
“Whenever we go to him, he never turns his back on us. He has a genuine open-door policy,” she stated.
Adding her voice to the call, Dr. Hawa Mai-Musa emphasized that the “Rotation Principle” is essential for regional harmony. She noted that with women constituting the bulk of the voting population, the movement for Askira is already at an advantage.
The Deputy Speaker’s profile as an intellectual and his experience chairing the House Committee on Ethics and Security are being cited as key qualifications for his potential elevation to the Red Chamber.
Though the Deputy Speaker is yet to make an official declaration, sources close to him indicate that he is currently engaged in wide-ranging consultations with constituents across the nine local government areas of the zone.
