A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and retired military officer, Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has passed away.
Useni, aged 82, died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, following a protracted illness.
The announcement of his passing was made on Thursday night by Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, through a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
Governor Mutfwang described Useni’s death as a profound loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation.
The Governor lauded Useni’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to national service, emphasizing his efforts in promoting peace and security, particularly in Plateau State and Northern Nigeria.
The statement read in part: “The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, deeply regrets to announce to the citizens of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians, the passing of the former minister.
“Governor Mutfwang recounted the illustrious career of the late General, who served Nigeria with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.
“After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics, where he continued his service to the nation. He served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The Governor commended Useni’s life of selfless service, highlighting his contributions to the military, politics, and community. He noted that Useni’s legacy of compassion, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others would be cherished forever.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” Governor Mutfwang said.
He expressed hopes for strength and fortitude for Useni’s family, the people of Plateau State, and the nation during this difficult time, while wishing them comfort and peace in the days ahead.
