The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has said Nigeria is making progress in democratic rule despite facing challenges.
Akume made the remark at the Public Lecture of Nigeria’s 26th years of democratic rule.
Akume paid tribute to the ordinary Nigerian citizens who stood strong against military oppression, brutality, and rights denial.
“The June 12 struggle is a watershed as millions of our men and women poured out on the streets from Lagos to Ilorin, Kaduna to Kano, Ibadan to Makurdi, Bauchi to Jos, Port Harcourt to Enugu,” he said.
“We are here today because many fought; many died, many were brutalised, many disappeared, many lost limbs, many were imprisoned.”
Akume praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to democratic principles and his efforts to re-engineer Nigeria.
“He has embarked on an unprecedented journey to re-engineer Nigeria and put it on the right footing,” Akume said.
“He has also instituted relevant reforms where needed. In two years, the impact of these reforms are quite visible. Strong indicators abound to show Nigeria is on the right track.”
