Nigeria’s junior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has made history with a thrilling 93-88 win over China in their 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup debut.
The team overcame a slow start to secure a hard-fought victory, defying expectations and silencing critics.
After trailing 24-16 in the first quarter, D’Tigress mounted a stunning comeback, outscoring China 22-20 in the second quarter to narrow the deficit.
The Nigerians took control in the third quarter, winning 23-16, and sealed the win with a 32-28 performance in the final quarter.
A standout player made a remarkable national debut, going 8-for-8 from the field with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
The win marks Nigeria’s first-ever FIBA World Cup victory and echoes the senior team’s historic achievement at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where they became the first African team to reach the quarterfinals.
D’Tigress will look to build on this momentum when they face Canada in their next Group B fixture on Sunday.
