Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed concerns about a recent coalition that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections, asserting it remains unperturbed.
Speaking at the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum emphasized the party’s readiness to reclaim power in 2027.
He highlighted PDP’s robust structure, widespread national appeal, and proven legacy as the foundation for leading Nigeria’s nation-building efforts.
Addressing the coalition, which includes some former PDP members, Damagum described it as a minor political venture unworthy of concern.
“A bird in hand is better than two in the bush, and some have learned this lesson the hard way,” he remarked, noting that many who initially joined the coalition have already returned to the PDP.
He added that some claimed they never left, merely attending a meeting, and the party has welcomed them back without judgment.
Damagum further pointed out that the coalition’s appeal has waned beyond PDP defectors, with members from other parties also abandoning the venture, recognizing its lack of promise.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, expressed empathy for those who left the party out of impatience but stressed that the PDP’s doors remain open for their return, within a reasonable timeframe.
“This is not the time for name-calling or insults,” he said, underscoring the need for discipline to address the party’s challenges.
Mohammed also praised the National Working Committee (NWC) members for their willingness to step down before their tenure ends, demonstrating unity and flexibility.
“If everyone remains rigid, we won’t achieve our goals,” he noted, acknowledging the challenges faced by governors and the NWC while reaffirming confidence in the party’s leadership.
The PDP’s resilience and commitment to its goals, Mohammed added, position it as a formidable force for the future.
