A devastating attack by unidentified gunmen on Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno villages in the Arondizuogu community, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, has reportedly claimed numerous lives.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the assault took place between Thursday night and early Friday morning, July 25, 2025.
A witness, who requested anonymity, told NAN that the attackers, riding multiple motorcycles, unleashed unprovoked gunfire on villagers, resulting in over 14 deaths across various locations.
The source urged authorities to bolster security and swiftly apprehend those responsible.
Graphic videos of victims lying in pools of blood surfaced on social media, sparking widespread anger and condemnation.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the attack, stating that at least seven people were killed in what he described as a “coordinated and barbaric act.”
“This inhumane assault is utterly unacceptable,” Okoye said, adding that the police have deployed operational and intelligence resources to track down the perpetrators.
Okoye revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attack, attributing it to suspected members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group.
“The commissioner is personally leading a tactical team to thoroughly search the affected areas, and the situation is now stabilized,” he assured. Danjuma has implemented proactive measures to prevent further attacks and ensure lasting peace.
Expressing condolences, Okoye said, “Commissioner Danjuma extends his deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased, praying for the repose of their souls and a swift recovery for the injured.”
He called on residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative, urging anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or the command’s emergency lines: 08034773600 or 08103341610.
“All tips will be handled with strict confidentiality,” he emphasized. (NAN)
