Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere
By BARBARA KALU, Owerri –
Lawmaker representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo, Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere, has expressed concern over serious existential threats posed by erosion and insecurity in his constituency.
Speaking at a news briefing in Owerri on Thursday, Ugochinyere urged State and Federal Governments to address these issues without delay.
Ugochinyere said erosion has ravaged buildings and farmlands in Ideato, with bigger challenges emerging in areas like Urualla after controlling the Umuchima erosion menace.
“Ideato is sinking and is at the verge of extinction, and requires the deliberate attention of the State and Federal Governments to salvage the people.”
The lawmaker lamented worsening security breaches in the area, calling for establishment of local vigilance groups to tackle the menace. He expressed regret over a recent attack on Arondiizuogu communities where over 26 people were killed.
“Whether it was caused by separatist groups, kidnappers or organ harvesters, the situation has gotten scary as people no longer go to farms, while many have fled to the cities.”
Ugochinyere said he had disbursed N5 million to assist survivors and families of deceased persons and launched the “Ideato Emergency Fund” to support victims of armed attacks.
“The fund has so far realised N32 million with a N50 million target through donations from friends in the next few days.”
Ugochinyere threatened to quit the Peoples Democratic Party with his supporters if his alleged maltreatment by the party continues.
“If you treat us fine, we will be with you, and if you don’t, we will face another direction with our structure.”
