Taraba State Government has taken a firm stand against the illegal bestowal of traditional chieftaincy titles by ethnic groups, declaring such actions unlawful and a threat to the state’s traditional governance structure.
In a press conference held in Jalingo, the Permanent Secretary of the Taraba State Bureau for Local Government, Traditions, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Engr. Godfrey Dame Andrew, announced that only the titles of Chief and Emir are recognized under the state’s Traditional and Chieftaincy Law.
Reports had surfaced that certain individuals were appointing their kinsmen as ethnic leaders in various Local Government Areas, falsely claiming approval from the Bureau.
He debunked these claims, stating, “The Bureau has not granted such permission to anybody. These actions are not only false but mischievous, and we will not tolerate them.”
The government emphasized that Taraba’s traditional institutions operate under a clear hierarchical order, with the Chiefdom Emir at the apex, followed by District Heads, Village Heads, and Ward Heads. These positions are hereditary and recognized by the state, leaving no room for parallel ethnic councils or self-appointed rulers.
“The creation of parallel traditional authorities undermines our established system and risks disrupting peace and order,” Andrew warned.
To enforce compliance, the Bureau declared that any ethnic group found appointing or parading individuals as traditional rulers will face prosecution.
Andrew urged all residents to respect the state’s traditional institutions and warned against actions that could jeopardize harmonious coexistence. “We are committed to preserving the integrity of our traditional governance. Any attempt to create unauthorized leadership will face serious consequences,” he added.
The Bureau called on all ethnic groups to refrain from such practices and align with the state’s legal framework to promote unity and stability.
