FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has approved the long-pending requests from resident doctors, who launched a strike on September 15 over unresolved salary backlogs.
Wike shared the update during Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Northern Parkway project, stretching from Ring Road II to Ring III along Shehu Yar’Adua Way in Abuja.
He praised the doctors for suspending the action to prioritize patient care and the territory’s well-being.
“All the files containing the requests on my table have been duly signed.
“I must commend the resident doctors for calling off the strike, the administration is happy with their understanding,” he said.
Wike further instructed FCT Acting Head of Service and Senior Special Adviser on Administration, Samuel Atang, to implement the approvals without delay.
On the infrastructure front, Wike highlighted how the new parkway would boost job creation, alleviate urban congestion, and invigorate local commerce.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) noted that the walkout stemmed from protracted talks with the FCT Administration, after which the doctors halted operations to underscore their grievances.
Key demands include clearing salary shortfalls of one to six months for staff hired since 2023, urgent hiring of additional personnel, disbursement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, and settling dues from the 25/35 percent hike in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.
The group also seeks firm deadlines for finalizing promotion skips and salary scale conversions for all eligible members, among other reforms. (NAN)
