Lagos commuters received a measure of relief on Wednesday after the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that no lives were lost when a loaded 40-foot container truck overturned on Ojuelegba Bridge, inward National Stadium, Surulere.
The incident involved a Mack containerised truck which reportedly fell while descending the bridge, causing a complete blockage of the carriageway and disrupting vehicular movement in the area.
Confirming the development, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, told journalists that although the container obstructed the road, the situation was promptly brought under control.
“No casualty was recorded,” Adebayo said.
He explained that the fallen container blocked access for other vehicles on the bridge, necessitating immediate traffic management interventions. According to him, LASTMA officials swiftly diverted traffic to ease congestion and maintain order.
“All vehicular movements from Fadeyi and Onipan have been diverted through the service lane at Ojuelegba, to burst out at Barracks and connect Funso Williams Avenue,” he stated.
Adebayo added that LASTMA personnel were already on ground with the necessary equipment, working alongside other emergency responders to coordinate recovery operations and ensure the safe and timely evacuation of the truck.
“In the interim and pending the conclusion of the evacuation, motorists are notified that the Ojuelegba Bridge inward stadium has been temporarily closed to vehicular traffic,” he said.
He assured road users that the authority would continue to provide updates as recovery efforts progress, urging motorists to remain patient and comply with traffic diversions put in place for their safety.
