Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 18 people in a devastating road traffic crash that occurred on Tuesday along the Dutse–Kiyawa Highway, around Dan Masara Quarters in Dutse, Jigawa State.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide.
According to Mohammed, preliminary findings showed that excessive speeding combined with a tyre burst caused the driver to lose control, leading to what he described as an avoidable multiple-vehicle crash.
He said the accident involved two commercial Volkswagen Golf cars — a white one with registration number XA-500-KYW and a red one with registration number RAN-836-XA — as well as an orange Mercedes-Benz tipper truck with registration number BUU-289-XA.
Mohammed explained that a total of 20 persons were involved in the crash, including eight adult males, eight adult females, two male children and two female children.
“Eighteen persons died, while two male adults sustained injuries, including bruises, fractures, internal injuries and head trauma.
“The emergency rescue team was immediately activated upon receiving a distress call at 12:17 hours and arrived at the scene in less than five minutes.
“Victims were promptly evacuated to Dutse General Hospital for medical attention,” he said.
The FRSC boss stressed that the corps’ statutory responsibilities focus on crash prevention, enforcement of traffic regulations, coordination of rescue efforts and the prompt evacuation of victims.
He noted that the agency works closely with medical facilities and other emergency responders to save lives during road traffic emergencies.
As enforcement and rescue operations are intensified nationwide, Mohammed reiterated that speed violations, poor vehicle maintenance, and the use of worn-out or expired tyres remain major causes of fatal road crashes.
He advised motorists to always obey speed limits, ensure proper vehicle maintenance and exercise maximum caution while on the road.
Mohammed also confirmed that a full investigation into the incident had commenced, assuring the public of continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
He said this would help strengthen emergency response capacity, expand operational logistics and improve road safety outcomes in line with global best practices.
The FRSC Corps Marshal expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to making Nigerian roads safer.
He called on all road users to take personal responsibility for safety, stressing that every crash prevented represents a life saved.
