Michael Olise stole the show as Bayern Munich ran riot to crush Atalanta 6–1 in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg at the Stadio di Bergamo on Tuesday night.
Bayern took control early. Josip Stanišic opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a simple tap-in, but Olise grabbed the spotlight with a curling strike in the 22nd to make it 2–0.
Three minutes later, Serge Gnabry lifted the ball over the keeper to make it 3–0 and leave Atalanta stunned.
After the break, Bayern didn’t let up. Nicolas Jackson scored in the 52nd minute, Olise grabbed his second in the 64th, and Jamal Musiala tapped in from close range in the 67th to make it 6–0.
Atalanta managed a late consolation when Mario Pašalić scored in the 90+3rd minute, but by then the damage was done.
Bayern controlled the game from start to finish.
They held about 70% of the ball and outshot Atalanta 25 to 11, with 13 on target.
Olise’s runs and finishing kept Atalanta’s defence on their toes, while Gnabry and Musiala added their own threats.
The only concern for Bayern was Alphonso Davies going off injured late in the game.
The win gives Bayern a big advantage for the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
With a five-goal cushion, they are well on course for the quarter-finals, while Atalanta face a huge challenge to overturn this deficit.
