
Lamine Yamal scored a 98th-minute penalty to earn FC Barcelona a dramatic 1–1 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Barcelona were heading for defeat after Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead late in the game, sparking celebrations around the stadium.
The Premier League side had made things uncomfortable for most of the night, pressing aggressively and limiting Barcelona’s space going forward.
Just when it looked over, Barcelona got a lifeline deep in stoppage time.
In the 96th minute, Dani Olmo went down inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot.
Yamal stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, finishing low to make it 1–1 with the final kick of the match.
The late equaliser could prove significant.
The draw keeps the tie open and ensures the second leg will now be played at Camp Nou, where Barcelona will fancy their chances in front of their home crowd.
For Newcastle, it will feel like two points dropped at the very end.
