Vice-Chancellor of University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, has announced that the institution matriculated 6,553 new students into its 100 and 200 level programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Professor Mele disclosed this on Tuesday during his welcome address at the university’s matriculation ceremony in Maiduguri.
He explained that the newly admitted students gained entry through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Direct Entry (DE), as well as placement from the university’s Remedial Arts and Science programmes.
According to him, the university has continued to uphold its reputation as a centre of learning and opportunity for generations of Nigerians despite numerous challenges.
“Despite the challenges we have faced over the years — including the effects of insurgency and limitations in funding and infrastructure — the University has remained strong and resilient.
“We expect you, our new students, to show the same resilience, courage, and determination. You are the future of your communities and indeed the future of our nation,” Mele said.
The Vice-Chancellor also provided a breakdown of the newly admitted students across the institution’s colleges and faculties. The College of Medical Sciences recorded 531 students, while the Faculty of Agriculture admitted 234 students.
The Faculty of Arts has 115 students, the Faculty of Communication Studies 78 students, and the Faculty of Education admitted 969 students. The Faculty of Engineering has 775 students, while the Faculty of Environmental Sciences admitted 193 students.

The Faculty of Physical Sciences admitted 899 students, the Faculty of Social Sciences 453 students, while the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine recorded 109 students, bringing the total number of newly admitted candidates to 6,553.
Addressing the new students, Professor Mele urged them to uphold the core values of discipline, hard work and morality throughout their academic journey.
“To our new students, as you begin this journey, I would like to emphasize three important values that should guide your time at the University of Maiduguri: discipline, hard work, and morality.
“Discipline is the foundation of success. Students who succeed are those who manage their time well, attend classes regularly, and balance their academic and personal responsibilities. The University provides the environment for you to learn and grow, but it is your discipline that will determine how far you go.
“There will be many temptations and shortcuts along the way, but remember that true academic success must be earned. I also strongly advise you to avoid negative behaviours such as examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, misuse of social media, and any form of violence.
“The University will not tolerate any act that threatens peace and discipline on campus. Any student found guilty of such misconduct will face serious disciplinary action, including possible expulsion and prosecution.”
He further emphasized the importance of diligence in academic pursuits.
“Hard work is the key to achieving your goals. No one can work harder for your future than you. In your classrooms, laboratories, studios, and workshops, you must be ready to put in the effort and dedication required for success.
“Your lecturers and mentors will guide you, but your commitment to hard work will determine your achievements.
“Morality is equally important. As you pursue your studies, always uphold the values of honesty, integrity, and respect. Your character will define you even more than your academic results.”
Professor Mele also expressed appreciation to parents and guardians for their trust in the institution.
“To our parents and guardians, we sincerely thank you for entrusting your children to our care. We understand the sacrifices you have made to bring them to this stage, and we take this responsibility seriously,” he said.
