Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from his position in the coming days, a development that is already generating debate over the timing of his exit and the future of ongoing reforms in the country’s struggling electricity sector.
The disclosure was made on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, in a statement following a high-level engagement where the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan were presented.
The statement reads: “In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days.”
Tunji explained that the anticipated resignation is tied to Adelabu’s political ambitions in Oyo State, while also noting that the minister intends to conclude key reforms before stepping aside.
“The timing of his anticipated resignation reflects his commitment to addressing key sectoral challenges and ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms prior to exiting office. Notably, this includes efforts to stabilise the sector following recent declines in power generation due to gas supply constraints to power plants, ongoing pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers, as well as the need to secure the President’s approval for his intended resignation and gubernatorial aspiration in Oyo State.”
Controversy Over Timing
Adelabu’s expected resignation comes at a sensitive period for Nigeria’s electricity sector, which has recently experienced fluctuations in power generation, sparking concerns among industry stakeholders and consumers already grappling with unreliable electricity supply.
Critics argued that stepping down at a time when the sector is battling gas supply constraints, infrastructure challenges, and mounting debts to gas suppliers could disrupt reform efforts and slow progress.
However, supporters of the minister insist that his decision to stabilise ongoing reforms before exiting demonstrates responsibility and strategic planning.
According to the statement, Adelabu used the meeting to highlight achievements recorded under his leadership, particularly in improving electricity generation and strengthening infrastructure across the power value chain.
“During the meeting, the minister outlined key milestones recorded under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, strengthen transmission capacity, and implement reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency and service delivery across the power sector value chain.”
Political Ambition in Focus
Adelabu’s anticipated exit is widely linked to his reported governorship ambition in Oyo State, a move that has sparked mixed reactions within political and industry circles. While some see it as a natural progression in his political career, others believe his departure could leave unfinished business in a sector still struggling to meet national demand.
As the days unfold, attention is expected to shift toward who may replace Adelabu and whether the ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector will maintain momentum amid the leadership transition.
