
Suspected gunmen have abducted several students of Nasarawa State University at the institution’s Engineering campus located in Gudi, Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The incident was confirmed by the Nasarawa State Police Command in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel.
According to the statement, the Command received a distress call in the early hours of Thursday after unidentified armed men reportedly invaded a student lodge at Anguwar Ninzo in Gudi, situated on the outskirts of the town.
The attackers were said to have forcefully taken away some students to an undisclosed location during the operation.
Police authorities disclosed that six of the victims have so far been identified as students of the Faculty of Engineering, Gudi Campus of the university. Another victim, believed to be a visitor staying with one of the students at the time of the attack, was also reportedly kidnapped.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
The police boss subsequently redeployed the Area Commander in Akwanga to oversee security operations in the area pending the rescue of the abducted victims.
The Command further revealed that a joint security operation involving personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), the military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), vigilante groups, and other tactical units has been launched to track down the kidnappers and secure the safe release of the victims.
The police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist security agencies in the ongoing rescue efforts.
