Plateau State Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Garba Biggs, has pledged to serve only one term if elected governor in 2027, saying he would respect the state’s zoning arrangement and complete only the remaining four years allotted to the Central Zone.
Biggs made the declaration during a media interaction with journalists in Jos shortly after emerging as the PDP governorship flagbearer.
According to him, the issue of zoning remains one of the strongest unifying factors among Plateau people and must be protected in the interest of political stability and fairness.
“On my honour, I am making this declaration: if given the mandate and the opportunity, I will serve out only the remaining four years allotted to the Central Zone of Plateau State, which is presently in Mangu,” he said.
The former Permanent Secretary in Government House stated that respecting the zoning formula was necessary to sustain peace, balance and inclusiveness in Plateau politics.
“The guiding principle is simple. Whenever anyone attempts to go against the zoning arrangement, Plateau people unite and speak with one voice. That is one of the few issues that truly unite Plateau people,” he added.
Biggs said he would not want to be remembered as a politician who disrupted the state’s rotational arrangement, insisting that preserving zoning would guarantee long-term political stability.
“As an individual, I also have a life to live after leaving office. What would I want to be remembered for? Would I want to be remembered as the person who came and disrupted the zoning arrangement, or as someone who respected and upheld the principle of zoning?” he asked.
The PDP candidate also dismissed fears that political power could influence him to seek tenure elongation, noting that he was already familiar with the corridors of power after decades in public service.
“Yes, power can be intoxicating, but I am not a stranger to power. I have been within power circles, I have been around power, and I understand what power is,” he stated.
Biggs, who hails from Mangu Local Government Area, said his aspiration was aimed at completing the tenure believed to belong to the Central Zone under Plateau’s informal power-sharing arrangement.
He further called for inclusive governance and pledged to run a people-oriented administration if elected in 2027.
